The drains in your pool play a vital role to the functioning of your pool as a whole. Most pools have multiple drains scattered around the bottom surface of the pool that allow for the passage of oils and dirt that can sometimes accumulate in the water from sunscreens and lotions or even gardening debris. Because of the drain’s purpose, it’s vital that it remains cleared and operational in order to perform its functions like normal and keep your pool running smoothly.
Drain cleaning is the process of clearing and removing all of the excess dirt and debris that can gather on or around your pool’s drain. This typically happens when the drain is attempting to filter out some of the debris but it is too big to fit through the holes of drain, thus causing a blockage, clog, or simply a buildup. We recommend having your drain cleaned frequently, especially if your pool is not a covered one that can accumulate more debris during the fall and winter months or as the seasons change.
When your drain becomes clogged, either from too much debris or lack of maintenance, then we can help clear it out for ongoing use. Having a clogged drain means that the water in your pool will continue to accumulate more dirt and debris that will not be filtered accordingly and could cause illness or rashes when swam in. To avoid this and to know if or when your drain becomes clogged, it’s best to have a professional pool technician check out your pool drains often to ensure they’re draining and filtering items accordingly. Keeping the pipes attached to the drains is also crucial, to avoid buildup reentering your pool water from the drain itself.
Drain covers are small devices of either metal or plastic that can be added to the top of the drain to help make maintenance and cleaning easier. Drain covers help to readily trap larger items that would otherwise try to force into the drain. Removing the drain cover and simply rinsing it over the sink to remove the debris is much easier than later clearing out a clogged pump full of leaves, large bugs, and heavy or sticky liquids. We recommend investing in a drain cover to make overall drain maintenance quicker and easier than ever before, as drain covers are relatively inexpensive compared to drain repairs!
The drain pump is the pipe connected to the other side of the drain from the bottom and transports the dirt and debris away from the pool water and into the waste area. Drain pumps can also become dirty and clogged with debris if the drain is constantly trying to filter out heavy oils and liquids which can later become lodged into the pump and create a wall of buildup. The sticky residue can eventually harden, causing the pump to leak or burst, if not given the proper maintenance and cleaning it needs. We can also help you to clean pool filter.
